Job Description:

A Shop Technician in the Fire and Safety Industry is responsible for overseeing the efficient management of a centralized shop supporting the Branch Managers, technicians and other staff ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently and accurately. The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks to meet tight deadlines.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Service 30 to 40+ fire extinguishers per day, including dry chemical, Co2, wet chemical and wheeled unit extinguishers. Record on the daily service log sheet.
  • Service, test, and repair kitchen fire suppression system cylinders.
  • Service and test fire hoses.
  • Recycle the scrap/condemned fire extinguishers and scrap metal.
  • Recycle the dead batteries from emergency lights, fire alarm panels and security systems.
  • General building maintenance, (cutting grass, clearing snow from the office entrances, etc.).
  • Ensuring exchange unit fire extinguishers are in stock (5lb, 10lb & 20lb).
  • Keeping the shop clean, organized, and maintaining all the shop equipment.
  • Ordering stock for the shop, (extinguisher parts, wet chemical agent, Co2 etc.).
  • Completing work orders and recording the appropriate billing via manually or electronically.
  • Servicing walk-in customers’ equipment and dealing with customers when called upon.
  • Become certified in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods.
  • Stay up to date on the current codes. NFPA 10, CSA and CGA Standards.
  • Wearing the proper PPE when performing your daily duties.
  • Take out the garbage and recycling from the shop and office areas.
  • Using company vehicle to make deliveries as needed.
  • Assist technicians on jobs if/when called upon.
  • Receive deliveries and shipments from couriers.

Qualifications and Skills:

Minimum of 1-3 years of experience.

  • Knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code.
  • Knowledge of NFPA10.
  • Knowledge of NFPA17A.
  • Knowledge of CSA standards.
  • Knowledge of CGA standards.
  • Knowledge of various NFPA codes and standards.
  • Excellent administrative, organizational and computer skills.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and mathematical abilities.
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs and provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written.
  • A valid motor vehicle license is required (Class G) with annual abstract to maintain eligibility.
  • Ability to transport equipment and tools weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Overall, the Shop Technician in the Fire and Safety Industry plays an essential role in ensuring the smooth running of the business, supporting the work of the management and staff, and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures is preferred.
